Does " Set against developments of this sort " in the following context mean "in the situation of developments of this sort"? Context: Such attitudes assisted in the opening up of postmodern outlooks within the culture that were marked politically by a recognition of and respect for cultural diversity and difference. Set against developments of this sort , Capitalist Realism, with its emphasis on dominant cultural values, was not really able to remain in sole command of the field, especially when the economic boom of the 1980s brought home the need for advertisers to differentiate between and address an increasing number of new consumer groups (Art and Advertising by Joan Gibbons).

Had Done / Were To Have Done?

1. If I had seen you by the end of this year, I would be very glad. 2. If I were to have seen you by the end of this year, I would be very glad. Let's say "I" is in a situation where "I" cannot meet "you" for some reason, so "I" thinks it's impossible to see "you" . In this case, if "I" says one of the sentences, can "had seen" and "were to have seen" be meant for the future hypothetical(unreal?) situation?

Please check the following sentences: 1: None of the students are going. 2: None of the students is going. I know sentence #1 is correct because the book says so. If it were up to me, then I would consider the sentence #2 correct rather than the sentence #1. None is singular, not plural. None means not a single . Right?

'In Vacation' OR 'On Vacation'?

Hi, I've just heard from someone that both "in vacation" and "on vacation" are correct & that their meanings are very close to each other. However, their usages are different. 1. "He's on vacation" means that he's enjoying his holiday. 2. "He's in vacation" just means that he's off from work. So, it's not appropriate to write something like "I'm on vacation till..." in some pre-set auto-reply at office because it's a personal thing & you need not tell your colleagues that you're enjoying your holiday. Instead, we should write "I'm in vacation till..." Could you let me know whether the above are correct? Thanks. Kathy
