Is a period necessary in dialogue that uses suspension points to convey a sense of trailing off between separate sentences? Example: "I thought I was helping. . . . But I guess I was wrong." OR "I thought I was helping . . . But I guess I was wrong." I have seen other ending punctuation marks being used along with suspension points, such as "I thought I was helping! . . . But I guess I was wrong." But I'm wondering if the same convention applies to periods. Thanks for your input.
