A sentence from my teacher: "Johnson's capture when fighting in China changed the course of the war." Is incorrect. "Johnson's capture" would not have been fighting. If I were the teacher, I would also use WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN, but I couldn't figure out the rule to distinguish this and WOULD NOT BE, because my sense tells me WOULD NOT BE is the past tense, which seems to fit in. Could you help me?
